Position Description

General Purpose: This position is designed to provide hands-on experience in estimating practices, vendor coordination, and project documentation to build foundational knowledge in construction cost management.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Review construction documents and perform quantity takeoffs for materials, labor, and equipment using estimating software.
  2. Help prepare preliminary cost estimates and budgets under supervision.
  3. Support the development of detailed cost breakdowns for bids and proposals.
  4. Communicate with suppliers and subcontractors to gather pricing and availability information.
  5. Help compile bid packages and distribute RFQs (Request for Quotes).
  6. Participate in bid review meetings and document key decisions.
  7. Visit job sites to observe construction activities and understand real-world cost drivers.
  8. Document site conditions and assist in validating estimate assumptions.
  9. Shadow estimating team and project managers to gain insight into the full project lifecycle.
  10. Attend internal training sessions on estimating tools, construction methods, and compliance standards.
  11. Stay updated on industry trends, material costs, and labor rates.
Position Requirements

Travel: This position may require travel of up to 20% of the time.

 

Education and/or Experience: This position requires a high school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

This position requires active enrollment in a construction management or related degree program.

 

Language Skills: This position requires the ability to read, analyze and interpret plans, specifications, contracts, terms and conditions or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

 

Mathematical Skills: This position requires the ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

 

Reasoning Ability: This position requires the ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
